Shonan Jazz Collective

The Shonan Jazz Collective — a rotating cast of studio veterans and younger voices from the Shonan scene — gathered in Zushi on six consecutive nights in September 2024, when the Milky Way hangs directly above the coast. Each piece was begun after midnight and finished before the fishing boats returned at dawn. There is an alertness to this music, a nocturnal clarity, that distinguishes it from the collective's daytime work. The title track opens with alto saxophone alone against the sound of surf before the full ensemble arrives like stars filling a darkening sky.
